Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2025-01-26

This policy explains, in plain language, what information BoomType collects, why we collect it, where it's stored, and the choices you have. We've written it to match what the app actually does today — not boilerplate. If we add new data flows (ads, analytics, payments) we'll update this page and call it out below.

1. Guest mode and your guest ID

You do not need to create an account to use BoomType. The first time you take a test or submit a result, we generate a random guest ID (a string like guest_…) and store it in your browser's localStorage under the key boomtype-guest-id. This is not a cookie — it is local browser storage, and it never leaves your device except as an HTTP header attached to API requests you make to BoomType.

The guest ID lets us tie your test results back to a stable identity so we can compute XP, streaks, and (when leaderboards launch) your ranking. It is not linked to your name, email, or any account.

You can clear your guest ID at any time using the button below, or by clearing site data in your browser. Clearing it does not delete past results already stored on BoomType's servers — those remain under the old guest ID — but future activity will be associated with a new guest ID.

2. Test results

When you complete a timed test or a practice round, BoomType stores the following data in its database, associated with your guest ID:

  • Words-per-minute (WPM) score
  • Accuracy percentage
  • Number of errors
  • Test duration (in seconds)
  • Mode (test or practice)
  • Timestamp of the result

We store this so we can show you your history, compute your best WPM, track XP and level progression, and (when leaderboards launch) place you in rankings. We do not store the actual text you typed, only the aggregate metrics above.

3. Nicknames and the leaderboard

You can set a public nickname in your profile. Nicknames are visible to other users on leaderboards and next to any results you choose to share. Pick a nickname you're comfortable being public — don't use your real name if you'd rather stay anonymous.

Nicknames are subject to moderation. We may rename or hide nicknames that are abusive, offensive, or impersonate another person. See our for the full acceptable-use policy.

4. The contact form

If you submit the contact form, we store your message alongside the name and email you provided (both optional) so we can read it and reply. Messages are stored on BoomType's servers and accessed only by the team for the purpose of responding. We do not publish contact form submissions and we do not add you to any marketing list.

5. Payments

BoomType's core lessons and tests are free. We're planning an optional premium tier in a future phase. When payments launch, payment data (card numbers, billing details) will be handled entirely by our payment provider — BoomType will not store full card numbers or raw payment credentials on its own servers. We'll update this policy before any payment feature goes live.

6. Advertising

We may show ads to free users via Google AdSense. AdSense uses cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to BoomType and other sites on the internet.

AdSense has its own cookie policy and disclosure that you can review on Google's advertising cookies page. You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. Premium subscribers will not see ads.

7. Analytics

We plan to use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand aggregate usage patterns (which lessons are completed, average test durations, drop-off points). GA4 is not yet live on BoomType as of the last-updated date above. When we enable it, we'll update this section with the specific data GA4 collects and the cookie(s) it sets. We will not use analytics to identify individual users.

8. Cookies and local storage

As of the last-updated date, BoomType itself does not set any cookies. We use localStorage for:

  • Your guest ID (key boomtype-guest-id)
  • Your lesson progress, test history, and preferences (key boomtype-v1)

Third-party cookies may be set by Google AdSense (see section 6) and, when enabled, by Google Analytics (see section 7). You can clear all of BoomType's local storage via your browser's site-data controls.

9. Data selling and sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your data with third parties for their own marketing purposes. The only third parties who may process your data are the service providers explicitly listed in this policy (AdSense, GA4 when enabled, and the future payment provider), each under their own terms.

10. Your choices

  • Clear guest ID: use the button in section 1 or clear site data in your browser.
  • Change nickname: visit your profile and update it.
  • Opt out of personalized ads: visit Google Ads Settings (see section 6).
  • Request data deletion: contact us using the contact form with the email or guest ID you'd like removed. We'll delete associated test results and contact messages within 30 days.

11. Children's privacy

BoomType is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

12. Changes to this policy

We'll update this policy when we add new features that change what data we collect. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of BoomType after a change indicates acceptance of the updated policy.
